Help choosing a web/software programming certificate from the following university (URL in post)

I would like to learn basic web and/or software programming, and I've found that my local university, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers undergraduate certificates in software engineering, web and information technology. The PDF listing these certificates is online at http://www.umuc.edu/certificates

I'd like to ask any programmers if they could recommend to me which of these certificates would be most practical for me, because I am very tech-savvy and an advanced computer user, but programming and web programming are all new to me.

I'm a quick study, but I'd like to begin with the certificate that would give me real-world use soon after achieving it and get me on my way to having the basics to build on for later self-study on my own.

I am currently working to finish a degree in Communications, and I'm not interested in most degree programs, which would seem to only set me up to be a Microsoft IT professional. I think the certificate would be the best route for me to get the quick and fast knowledge I crave, but I want to choose the right one.

My goal is to learn to build software or web applications one day, possibly in my own business, but I have to know which programming language to begin with.

VB: which ActiveX control?

I've used an ActiveX HTML control to grab web pages but what I need to do now is interact with those pages. Specifically type some text into a field and press submit.

Why would I want to do this? For instance: my VB program would take prefixes and key words of my choice and then check to see if these domains were available.

So... anybody know what kind of ActiveX control I'd need to do this? Another example: there are all these submission engines that take one web profile and submit it to 100's of search engines. How do they do that?

ScreenCapture?

I am writing a program that requires repeatedly capturing the contents of the screen.
The way I have it done now:
Using a timer, it captures the screen into a variable. The variable is declared everytime the timer executes so the variable becomes empty. However, after running it for a few minutes it begins draining system resources until the computer freezes. If I close it before it freezes, the resources don't have back, they're just gone. I have to restart.

So does anyone know a different way of doing a screen capture that won't drain resources if done a few thousand times?

Losing Session btwn ASP and ASP.NET

I have a site that i was assigned to that has a subfolder in the root that handles the log in content management functions that is done in asp. The rest of the site is in aspx and it works together. The only problem is that when another person attempts to log on the session or the application enters another subfolder in the root, the session is ended and the user is asked to log in again. There is not global.asa file and the global.asax file doesn't capture the login done in asp in the subfolder level. Having jumped ship from novice asp r to novice asp.net early on in my learning I'm not sure what is going on or even how to debug. The client doen't want to have the asp pages rewritten because my contractor has pushed that into a later phase, but both of them want it to work last week..argh! Any ideas out there? I've read so many things that I'm not sure what is right...some sites say yes asp.net and asp can share session information, or at least aspx has backwards compatibility, other sources say absolutely not with out moving info to the database (requiring rewrite of the asp pages) or creating some transaction routine (time out of my pocket). I also think it may have something to do with the boundries (ie application and its subfolders in IIS) of the main app. Please I need a glimmer of hope on the subject before I decide to go back and wait tables to get through school. thanks ahead of time.

Ok I got this form. A listbox reads a list of names from a database. It used to be that you could press the first letter of a person's last name and it would jump to that section. It still works with another listbox on the same form just not with the names listbox. Any ideas?
